Preparation is Key
Before you even consider opening your tin of Ronseal Ultimate Protection Decking Stain, proper preparation is non-negotiable. Your decking must be scrupulously clean and completely free of dirt, oil, grease, wax, and silicone. Crucially, any algae, moss, or mildew must be thoroughly scrubbed off, and the timber left to dry completely.
For Untreated, Weathered Decking: If your deck is showing signs of age, an essential first step is to apply a dedicated decking restorer. This product works to highlight your deck’s natural colour and creates an optimal, sound base for the stain, ensuring deep and effective penetration. Follow the restorer's instructions carefully, then allow your deck to dry out thoroughly before proceeding with the stain.
For Previously Treated Decking: If your decking has been previously painted or oiled, it’s imperative to get it back to bare wood. While it might sound daunting, using a quality Decking Stripper will achieve this efficiently and is absolutely worth the effort for a professional finish. If your deck was previously stained, avoid the common mistake of trying to apply a lighter stain over a darker one – you will need to strip the old stain first.
For New Wood Decking: New decking often comes pre-treated with waterproofing agents. These can prevent your stain from adhering properly. To counteract this, give your new deck a vigorous scrub with a Decking Cleaner & Reviver. Alternatively, you can simply leave the new wood to weather naturally for about six months. After cleaning or weathering, rinse the deck thoroughly with water, ideally using a pressure washer. To check if any pre-treatment remains, sprinkle some water on the deck; if it beads, you'll need to clean it again until the water no longer beads. Ensure the wood is completely dry before application.
The Application Process
Optimal application of Ronseal Ultimate Protection Decking Stain is best undertaken in temperatures above 10°C, on a day with a clear forecast, and, as always, on thoroughly dry decking.
Begin by giving the stain a very good stir. Before applying broadly, dip your brush or decking pad and test a small, inconspicuous area to confirm you are happy with the chosen colour. Start in the furthest corner of your deck, brushing along the length of 3-4 boards at a time to prevent unsightly overlap marks.
You will need to apply two coats, leaving a minimum of four hours between each application. After just 24 hours, your newly protected deck will be ready for furniture and enjoyment, safeguarded against all weather conditions and everyday heavy footfall. Any accidental splashes on skin can be easily washed off with warm, soapy water.
Aftercare for Lasting Beauty
To maintain your decking's pristine appearance and extend the life of the stain, regular aftercare is beneficial. Sweep your decking with a stiff broom to remove debris, leaves, and dirt that can accumulate in the grooves. Should you notice any mould or algae developing, clean it promptly to prevent further spread. Regularly inspect your decking for any signs of dirt or localised damage. For minor imperfections, a simple fix involves lightly sanding the affected spot and reapplying a thin, localised coat of the stain.
